What a difference a year makes: Trenches Law’s learning and development progress

It’s a time to mark milestones here at Trenches Law this month, as we celebrate one year of Phill Stockdale-Woodhead’s expertise. Phill joined the team in April 2022 and has since made huge strides as our business partner for HR and learning.

Phill says: “When I joined after nearly 20 years at Virgin Media, I didn’t know what to expect. My colleagues have all been amazing, honest to a fault, and constantly pushing me to be the best we can be!”

Here’s what Phill has delivered so far…

Putting mental health first

Mental health is something we take incredibly seriously at Trenches Law, which is why we now have the Bupa Employee Assistance Programme in place. Our staff benefit from access to 24/7 counselling, looking at both workplace and personal challenges including anxiety, bereavement, addiction, and relationship struggles.

Phill supported the setup of this multi-channel service in January 2023 — which offers phone support, self-help resources, and web chat counsel.

A brand-new learning management system

We’ve now migrated from our old video based e-learning platform to EdApp and its micro-learning approach for all our in-house training, and look forward to the benefits it brings. Already, the team has seen huge efficiencies — including taking mandatory data protection training down from 1 hour and 44 minutes to a mere 29.

EdApp has also helped to consolidate our existing training into Learning Pathways. This empowers Trenches Law to provide a personalised learning experience, building on the foundations of traditional educational methods. With focuses on customer service, legal training, management development and more, we’re excited to see what’s next.

Engaging approaches to learning

Staring at a screen does nothing to engage learners. Phill has helped us move away from the ‘pore and snore’ approach, and instead introduced interactive power hours. We’re rolling these out across 50 new courses in the EdApp — including Karamo’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training.

Onboarding will now be simpler and more interactive. The proof is in the pudding – learning hours have increased dramatically, with teams taking on new skills in bite-sized chunks. To date, we’re spending an average of 65 hours learning, with EdApp logins topping four figures.

Looking forward

With these new resources and approaches in place, Phill looks forward to delivering even more courses in the future. These will be centred around teamwork and personal development, including:

  • Speaking with confidence – ideal for presentations, pitches, and one-on-one interactions with colleagues and clients.
  • Stepping into team leadership – discovering everybody’s varying working styles and pulling together to reach our goals as a collective.
  • Leading a high-performing team – leveraging each individual’s skills and strengths to augment group success.
  • Building a customer-focused culture – taking these lessons and applying them to all stakeholders.

What the team has said so far…

Phill has had some incredible feedback on his new training methods, including:

“Very positive and upbeat, felt guided to the learning, not just told. Felt involved and very light hearted but learnt a lot.” — Chester Walsh

“The session was really inclusive and fun. Overall, it felt like catching up with friends, discussing work-related matters and how to improve oneself rather than a classroom training session — which I personally find more appealing as it suits my style of learning.” — Amy Marshman

We’re proud to have you on board, Phill, and look forward to even more fantastic learning-based outcomes in the future!
