Wayleave expertise streamlines EV charger installations for Ocean Charge

Given the difficult build environment, MDUs and MBUs have long been left out of EV charging installations, causing a major bottleneck in the move to green transportation. Instead of avoiding the gap, Ocean Charge is committed to plugging it. Keep reading to learn more about the business’ mission, and how Trenches Law’s wayleave expertise has helped streamline negotiations for frictionless installations.

About Ocean Charge

Powered by the UK’s fastest-growing private charging network, BlueCurrent, Ocean Charge specialises in providing zero-cost EV charging solutions for residential apartment blocks and commercial workplaces.

Operating as an end-to-end provider – covering all aspects from installation and operation to maintenance and ongoing management – the business works closely with landlords and property operators across the UK to make inclusive, accessible, and high-quality EV charging a reality. And, with a leading partner network compromising firms such as OZEV, RICS, ChargeUK, and the Green Building Council, the firm’s presence in the EV charging sector is only growing stronger.

The challenge

Backed by a wealth of experience in fibre, Ocean Charge was already well attuned to the differences between wayleaves and leases. Having decided wayleaves were a natural fit for its needs – particularly given its unique installation and charging-as-a-service management model – the business needed a trusted specialist that could help it hit the ground running. That’s where Trenches Law came in.

Initially brought to Ocean Charge’s attention via Google search, it was Trenches’ experience in both fibre agreements and EV charging contracts that ultimately satisfied the remit.

The solution

Trenches worked closely with the business to understand its unique operating model, the scope of the infrastructure roll-out, and any key challenges impacting the project’s delivery. Leveraging its wealth of expertise in telecoms and EV environments, Trenches was then able to tailor a solution that aligned perfectly with Ocean Charge’s requirements: a clear and concise wayleave agreement that would streamline negotiations to accelerate installations, while instilling confidence in the third parties granting land access.

The results

More than a one-time document, Trenches developed a longevous wayleave agreement that is now standard for Ocean Charge’s EV charging point installations. More importantly, it has been well received by landlords and property operators for its simplicity and clarity, offering a much more user-friendly alternative to traditional leases, which are often significantly more complex and burdensome.

Sam Foster, head of retrofit and founding member at Ocean Charge, said:

“Professional, swift, and truly expert, Trenches has been instrumental in the success of our EV infrastructure roll-outs. The team not only demonstrated a deep understanding of our needs but was also eager to collaborate from the moment we reached out.

“We were particularly impressed with the efficiency of the project from start to finish. Even more so, the fact this speed didn’t compromise the overall quality of the work, with an almost perfect initial wayleave draft that required minimal revisions before reaching the final version. Now, we have everything we need to carry negotiations forward.”
