From welcoming seasoned legal talent to restructuring our operations to deliver greater value to our clients, 2024 has been a year of significant growth. Along the way, we’ve also celebrated awards recognition, penned articles for leading industry journals, and shared expertise with peers across telecoms, EV, and tech, to name a few.
As another new year draws near, we’re excited to take on fresh challenges and expand our impact even further. But first, let’s reflect on our key milestones from 2024. Dive in…
1. Our turnover, partnerships, and senior team grew
In the same year we turned seven, we witnessed significant growth in the number of clients seeking our expertise. With a 37% jump in turnover and 16% rise in partnerships, clients spanning telecoms, tech, EV and startups – including big international names – have continued to flock to our experts for specialist legal support.
To keep pace, we added a duo of heavyweights to the team, including Rosana Lee, with 16 years in telecoms legal strategy, and Caroline Ford, a seasoned expert with decades of commercial experience in energy and media. Their insight strengthens our ability to tackle growth sectors like EV charging infrastructure and tech innovation, as we head into 2025.
2. Several service areas garnered industry recognition
We were thrilled to secure two shortlists and one win at the 2024 Learning Excellence Awards for our wayleave training initiative. This innovative approach has empowered altnets like Lightning Fibre and Zzoomm to overcome legal hurdles more effectively, accelerating network rollouts across the UK, with a strong 4.8/5 user rating paying testament to its lasting impact.
Additionally, we were proud to see our co-founder and managing director, Sharon McDermott, shortlisted for the Women Leaders in Tech Law category at the Law.com International WIPL UK awards. Sharon’s leadership in the telecoms sector and her transformative work in wayleave agreements continue to shape the legal landscape, driving meaningful change in the industry.
3. Our experts shared insights with leading industry journals
Since our inception in 2017, we’ve always been passionate about collaborating with industry peers, whether that’s sharing experiences and observations at industry conferences – such as Connected Britain, Channel Live, and RICS – or penning thought leadership for key media titles. And in 2024, we’ve not been short on things to say. But what were our favourite contributions?
- Law Society Gazette interviewed Sharon McDermott on her successes.
- In CiTTi Magazine, Sharon explored the disparities plaguing EV roll-outs.
- Terry Daniell shared our long-term priority to tackle the digital divide with Fibre Provider.
- How does full fibre legislation differ in the US? We shared more with Total Telecom.
- The Female Founder spotlighted Sharon’s successes for International Women’s Day
- Sharon shared her passions and interests in a more candid interview with BCL Legal.
And there’s plenty more where these came from.
4. We restructured to bring greater value legal services
This year, we restructured our operations to better meet the needs of our clients and the rapidly evolving telecoms industry. By consolidating expertise and streamlining processes, we’re delivering faster service, sharper legal insight, and even greater value for our varied client base.
From cutting turnaround times to enhancing cost-effectiveness, these changes ensure tailored, high-calibre support for every client. As the industry faces challenges like gigabit rollout and investment hurdles, complex contracts, and cumbersome red tape processes, we’re focused on driving better outcomes for businesses navigating challenging legal landscapes.
5. Our clients reaped rewards from our expert support
Seeing our clients succeed is, without a doubt, one of the most rewarding parts of the job for our team. From expanding residential and commercial EV charging infrastructure to overcoming the barriers facing MDUs and MBUs, we’ve been at the helm of some exciting transport projects this year. For Ocean Charge, an end-to-end provider specialising in zero-cost EV charging solutions, longevous wayleaves have been crucial in streamlining project delivery, while empowering the team to carry negotiations forward.
From driving growth for telecoms resellers to providing cost-effective counsel for startups, our commercial law expertise has also been a mainstay.
