Connecting with… Rosana Lee

Meet Rosana Lee, head of legal at Trenches Law. With 17 years of experience, she’s at the helm of some of our most complex and high-value transactions, particularly in the tech and telecom sectors. Learn how she drives innovation, tackles legal challenges, and winds down out of office.

Since entering the market space as a single person’s passion in 2017, Trenches Law has evolved significantly. Blending technological innovation with some of the industry’s finest talent, we’ve grown to become one of the most renowned legal firms in a fast-growth sector. Take one look at our ever-expanding trophy cabinet, and you’ll see evidence of that impact.

But it’s the commitment and expertise of our people who make these high standards so achievable. That’s why, in our employee spotlight, we’re keen to tell you a little bit more about them. And, having recently bolstered the senior lawyer team with more than 17 years post-qualification experience (PQE), who better to go next than Rosana Lee, our head of legal?

Take it away, Rosana…

Tell us a little bit about your role, and the part you play in Trenches Law’s success.

I’m a qualified solicitor with 17 years’ PQE and am currently head of legal at Trenches. My expertise lies in handling high-value, unique, and complex transactions, particularly within the technology and telecommunications sectors.

As the world continues to evolve, Trenches Law remains adaptable to help clients navigate and protect their interests in emerging technologies. I’m also seeing different ways in which clients want to collaborate with third parties – whether working with one or multiple – and how those clients need to be protected.

At Trenches, we keep things simple. This allows the legal team and I to very quickly identify the heart of the issue and efficiently resolve any disputes. I maintain the same straightforward approach when it comes to drafting contracts, so there’s no ambiguity and each party understands their respective obligations and rights. In some cases, when a client’s goals are not entirely achievable, I make it a priority to provide clear explanations as to why and offer practical alternatives to meet their needs as effectively as possible.

We pride ourselves on our approachable and down-to-earth culture – a quality I strongly encourage within the team to ensure our clients feel comfortable and supported throughout their interactions with us.

What attracted you to the job in the first place?

When I first consulted for Trenches Law back in 2021, I was immediately impressed by the firm and had the utmost respect for Sharon. I could see from the outside that Trenches Law was not the typical city law firm, and I wanted to be part of it. It had a distinct culture and personality like no other.

At the time, Trenches allowed me the flexibility to work remotely, which was ideal as I welcomed my second baby. After my maternity leave, Sharon asked me to head up the legal team and I jumped at the opportunity. The firm’s supportive environment, great team, and diverse range of work made the decision a no-brainer for me. Being made head of legal has been the icing on the cake, and I deeply value the trust and confidence Sharon has placed in me.

What’s been a standout career highlight to date?

My current senior position at Trenches. It shows that my team trusts and believes in my abilities, as well as their respect for my work – even knowing I work part-time, remotely, and manage home responsibilities alongside my disabilities. I never imagined, 17 years after qualifying, that I would have the opportunity to lead a legal team under these circumstances.

And while it’s early days, how about during your time at the business so far?

I was a bit out of my comfort zone when drafting a contract for electric vehicle (EV) chargers, as there were new and quite complex attributes to consider. However, I embraced the challenge and it’s now progressing well, so I’m happy I was given the opportunity to lead this transaction.

From your perspective, what makes Trenches Law stand out from other firms in the industry?

Trenches Law is like a family. Everyone who currently works here has been carefully selected and that shows in our teamwork. Unlike many other companies and law firms, we’re not just a number or a face among many. We’re all very passionate about what we do and go the extra mile whenever we can.

Who would be your dream client, and why?

My dream client would be an organisation such as Tesla. As a technology lawyer, it would be interesting to learn about their innovations, understand how they operate, and immerse myself in their unique culture. Ultimately, lawyers want and require some impetus among their usual work, so partnering with a business you are passionate about certainly helps.  Maybe I should approach them to see if they want to be a Trenches Law client!

Name another organisation you think is making waves in the sector right now:

I believe Google continues to make waves, particularly with its strategic use of innovations like AI. Its new AI function is sophisticated, and its technology could be used more widely to assist smaller companies in reducing costs, accelerating innovation, and improving customer experiences.

What do you think is one of the biggest challenges in the telecoms space right now, and how can it be overcome?

I would say data privacy and security (from a legal perspective). Having a robust and protective contract is crucial, and AI might even be able to assist somewhat in ensuring compliance in the future.

Companies are also finding their feet when it comes to implementing the Telecoms Security Act, so it’s an area we’re watching with interest. However, in my view, the biggest challenge is ensuring residents in multi-dwelling units (MDUs) are not going to be left behind in the full fibre roll-out – the social and digital divide is getting bigger by the day and it demands ongoing attention.

Tell us something you’d like to achieve over the next twelve months, both individually and as part of the business.

I’d like to help as much as I can to ensure Trenches continues its upward trajectory of growth and we have a number of exciting projects in the pipeline. Personally, and superficially, I’d like to make time for myself and get to enjoy our lovely river at the bottom of our garden, as I don’t relax enough. Taking time out is good for you, but I need to prioritise making that happen.

In an industry so reliant on collaboration, what’s the key to engaging with other businesses in a way that drives mutual success?

I would say open and honest communication. I ensure I respond to every email, provide truthful advice, and offer regular catch-ups and meetings so both sides are happy with the progress of the work. I don’t like to mark up contracts for the sake of it. While I understand that clients need contracts signed quickly to drive business, it’s important not to rush at any cost. Sometimes, clients just want to know what the material risks are and how they can be mitigated if they ever come to fruition – that’s a service we offer.

I appreciate working at Trenches because it encourages you to be yourself, especially when engaging with clients.

Finally, how do you switch off when you’re ‘out of office’?

My children  (aged 5 and 10) keep me very busy, so I am not sure I ever ‘switch off’. However, I like meeting friends for dinner, reading, knitting, and wherever possible going on holiday. I also love watching true crime documentaries or reality shows like Love Island and Married at First Sight. Plus, I keep myself entertained by playing Fantasy Football against my husband and other former work colleagues. Being the only girl in the league, I do feel an added pressure to do well against all the boys!
