Behind-the-scenes of Trenches Fest 2023!

If you know anything about Trenches, it’s that we don’t do things by halves. And this year, hot on the heels of celebrating our sixth anniversary, we followed our usual suit of gathering for a weekend of fun, frolics, and awards to finish off the excitement. Here’s a quick round-up of what we got up to at Trenches Fest, earlier this month…

Kicking off the team-wide Q2 event on Friday afternoon, we gathered as a collective at Stapeley Manor Farm to raise a glass to our sixth year of operation, reflect on some of the key highlights from the past 12 months, and mark some of our employees’ most notable achievements throughout the period.

A key highlight, Debra Rowberry, one of our wayleave officers, received the prestigious TL7 award — recognising her commitment to the pursuit and acquisition of difficult wayleave agreements in our Welsh valleys and surrounding villages, especially dealing with demanding multiple dwelling units (MDUs) and securing the permissions needed to help people living in these areas access hyperfast broadband provisions — which was presented alongside a fancy coffee machine as an additional gift. Now we can all enjoy some top-notch brews together!

Throughout the day, we shared company updates and engaged in various team building events. The overarching message was about coming together, just like we did at our first face-to-face kick-off event of 2023, back in January. It truly felt like we were all in it together, creating a fantastic vibe of unity and camaraderie.

One of the activities involved separate teams working together to move ‘toxic waste’, which was actually harmless popcorn tins. It taught us the importance of teamwork — we split the company into two teams and showcased how collaboration and communication are crucial for success. It was a hilarious and eye-opening experience!

After the team-building exercises, it was time to let loose and party. We had an incredible DJ, our very own Steve Sawley, spinning some memorable tracks on the decks. Plus, it was a real privilege to see our wayleave officers, Sonja Momchilovikj and Emilija Stamcevska, fly all the way from Macedonia to the UK for the event, where we welcomed them to the Trenches family once and for all.

On Saturday, the weather was on our side — we enjoyed ice creams, a sizzling barbecue in the afternoon and a variety of delicious street food in the evening as well as live music and an open bar. It was such a great atmosphere that people pitched up a tent and camped out for the whole weekend, some even bringing their own campervans for added comfort.

The bands we had lined up were simply sensational too (even if we do say so ourselves!). From The Cherry Pickers to Superfreak, and even The Ska Fella, who channeled the energy of Madness , the music kept the atmosphere alive well into the evening. The grand finale was the incredible Riots, belting out tunes reminiscent of The Killers. DJ Damon then took over, igniting the dancefloor until the early hours.

The event was truly a ‘family’ affair, with many people bringing their loved ones and children. The little ones had a blast with mini games, a bouncy castle, and an ice cream van serving up free treats. Something for everyone!

We’re still reeling over the laughter, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories we shared to commemorate our sixth birthday. Here’s to many more years of success and amazing celebrations at Trenches!
